News from the 2007 UCGIS Summer Assembly

The Summer Assembly took place at Lake Lodge, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. The meeting attracted delegates from member institutions from across the United States, representing academia, industry, and government to learn about, and participate in setting future directions for, cutting-edge GIScience research and education.

Dr. J. Ronald Eastman, School of Geography, Clark University, is the recipient of the 2007 UCGIS Research Award for the innovative and well-recognized research contributions embodied within the IDRISI GIS software.

Duane Marble

UCGIS Education Award

Dr. Duane Marble, Emeritus Professor of Geography at The Ohio State University receives the 2007 UCGIS Education Award for his outstanding contributions to geographic education, and is one of the founding fathers of geographic information systems education.

Student Travel Awards and Prizes

Six students received UCGIS Student Travel Awards to attend the Summer Assembly and present their research. Bo Zhang, Ohio State University, was awarded the Transactions in GIS award, and Wenwu Tang, University of Iowa, received the Cartography and Geographic Information Science award for his paper.


2007 Intergraph Research Award

Dr. Hassan Karimi from the School of Information Sciences at University of Pittsburgh was awarded the 2007 Intergraph Research Award for his proposal entitled, "Grid based geoprocessing."  The goal of this research is to add geoprocessing resources to the University of Pittsburgh's existing grid computing system (PittGrid) using Intergraph technology.


Harvard University joins UCGIS

In February 2007 Harvard University became the latest member to join UCGIS. Delegates are Wendy Guan, Director of GIS Research Services, Center for Geographic Analysis (Lead); Peter K. Bol, Professor of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, Director of Center for Geographic Analysis (Second;) Guoping Huang, GIS Specialist (Alternate); Peter Rogers, Professor of Environmental Engineering and Professor of City and Regional Planning (Alternate).


New UCGIS officers appointed February 2007; Ahearn and McMaster complete first 6 months as UCGIS President and President-Elect

Sean Ahearn, Hunter College, City University of New York assumed the UCGIS Presidency in February 2007. Robert McMaster, University of Minnesota was voted President-Elect. Elected Board members include Donna Peuquet, Pennsylvania State University, Marc Armstrong, University of Iowa, and Dan Brown, University of Michigan. Greg Easson, University of Mississippi took over as Chair of the Policy and Legislation Committee, and Steve Prager, University of Wyoming as the Chair of the Education Committee. John Wilson, University of Southern California, was appointed Treasurer.
